Chapter 26

"Jade, wake up," Rayel whispered by my side. "We're leaving. Now. Pack a small bag of toiletries and a change of clothes and come with me."

My heart beat rapidly. I was disorientated and had no idea of the time or why we were leaving in such a hurry.

"Come on," he insisted. We've got to get out of here. The Malabar figured out you're here and are on their way."

"Where are Laurenda and Dane?"

"They've gone to find help. They will meet up with us in Namore." He scanned the door open and practically pulled me to the PVT. We took off before I could fasten my seat belt.

I looked around the night sky. Very few PTVs were visible. The lights on the buildings had been dimmed for the night time.

"How did they figure out where I was?"

"We don't know. It is strange how they keep finding out stuff, almost like they have someone in our midst."

I frowned and asked, "But who?" My voice full of disbelief.

"I can't blame Foust anymore. He's not here. Plus, he didn't know where we took you."

"The only people knowledgeable about we are or what we are doing are the people from the command center and our small group of friends. They have protected me all these years. It wouldn't be them. Kat, well, Kat is Kat. She's my best friend, and who would she tell?"

"They might have planted a device on her when they kidnapped her."

"Really? They could do that?" Then I thought about lost dog implants. "I guess they could. What if they put one in me, while I was asleep and being observed?"

"You didn't have any stitches or anything, did you?" His voice sounded urgent.

I paused, thinking before I spoke. "No. Nothing that I know of, or remember."

"I don't think it was you. I know it wasn't me. That pretty much eliminates the obvious, but someone is telling them our every move." Rayel's voice was full of frustration. He leaned his head back and stared straight ahead.

We flew in silence, dodging other PVTs, and buildings until we flew into open space. Rayel took the PTV up higher off the ground. An occasional pinpoint of light appeared below, but we were pretty much surrounded by wide open space filled with stars above and darkness below.

"Were is Namore?" I asked, remembering that's where he said we'd go.

"He gave me a glance before concentrating on the course. “It’s in the Eastern most part of Corasias. My family has an apartment there. It isn't far from the beach."

"We'll be safe at the apartment?" I asked.

"Yes, if the Malabar assassins don't know about the apartment. Most of the people in Namore support the king. The Malabar live in Lusalt, in the far western part of the country. It would take them several hours to travel to Namore."

"Hours? That doesn't sound nearly as good as days."

"Sorry. The country is small, as I said, and can be crossed in a few hours."

He turned his concentration back to flying. The ship descended into a large area dotted with lights.
